Aunt Angela was busy packing. Megan went upstairs with a bag of pills Aunt Angela had left on the kitchen table. She took even more pills than Grandma had, and it was all so horrible, thinking about people getting older and then dying and there was nothing you could do about it. Megan tapped on the spare room door and went in.

‘Oh, thank you, love. You can put them beside my handbag over there.’

Megan sat down on the bed beside Aunt Angela’s weekend case. She’d spent the day with Hope and the others at the skatepark yesterday, so she hadn’t seen much of her oldest relative. She’d been dreading meeting the other kids, but everyone had been kind, and Hope and Susie’d made sure no one asked too many questions. She hadn’t told them she’d dumped Gabe, but thankfully he’d had an orthodontist appointment in London, so she hadn’t had to face him yet. Today, she was moving out of this house for good, so she wouldn’t see much of him at all now – and she would hardly see anything of Aunt Angela after this.

‘What did you mean on Thursday, that I can trust Holly?’ She’d wanted to ask ever since, but she’d never found the moment.

Aunt Angela put her black cardie into her case and smoothed it down. ‘You need a – a mother figure in your life, Megan. Another woman.’

She smiled, but her eyes only met Megan’s briefly. Megan shrugged inwardly. She trusted Holly more than Seth or Dylan, sure, but it wasn’t because Holly was a woman.

Aunt Angela closed the case and pulled the zipper round. ‘You know where I am if you need me, dear. Now, shall I help you pack?’

Megan shot off the bed. ‘No, thank you – I just need to sort through a couple of things and then I’m done.’ No way did she want Aunt Angela or anyone else shifting her stuff around.

‘All right. I’ll have a lie down for a little while, then we can have a cup of tea.’

Megan swallowed. Aunt Angela was going away. ‘Okay. I might take my school things over to Seth’s. I’ll be back in an hour.’

She fled to her room and grabbed the box with her sports stuff and a few other bits she’d need after the holidays, and shoved everything into Grandma’s suitcase that was her suitcase now. Taking these things to Seth’s before Holly came for her meant they could go straight back to Market Basing and she could forget about school completely for a bit.

Megan grabbed her denim jacket and left the house, and oh, God, this was the last time she’d leave this house to pop out somewhere and then come home again, wasn’t it?

The street was deserted, and Megan scurried past Gabe’s place with her head down. The more she thought about that almost-kiss after the funeral, the angrier she became. What had he thought he was doing? He hadn’t been thinking with his brain, anyway. Berk.

Laura answered the door when she rang the bell.
